Indonesia has raised the bar for participating in elections, Based on the Law No. 42 of 2008, nominations of candidates for presidential election may only be made by a party (or coalition of parties) which as at least 20% of the seats in the national Parliament (DPR).
With this regulation, we predicted that the presidential candidates nominated are most probably from strong Parties such as PDIP, Golkar, PD and Gerindra. These might leave us with:
- Probable Candidate Prabowo Subianto (Gerindra)
- Probable Candidate: Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono (PD), Gita Wirjawan (PD)
- Probable Candidate : Aburizal Bakrie (Golkar)
- Probable Candidate: Jokowi Widodo (PDIP)
We are quite confident that Indonesia will remain stable politically this year, eventhough there are growing fears that the level of political corruption might soar.
However, in the economic forefront, the positive effects of elections that will usually boost consumer spending might be outweighted by the effect of “wait and see” stance by foreign investors as they wait for the new president.
This will in turn impact the job market, as we would see slower recruitment and if all is well a boost of more recruitment in the job market for the year 2015.
